Let’s talk about FIVE HUNDRED YEARS OF BEING STOLEN, KILLED, RAPED, TORTURED, TREATED LIKE LITERAL ANIMALS, only to have the beneficiaries of said violence (including your mighty-light self) turn around and say all the things that were created by and for us are worthless, while still trying to sell it back to us.
It’s about the fact that the majority of Black performers are stuck with labels that are disproportionately controlled and profited off of by white men.
It’s about the fact that you got people BEATING LITTLE BLACK GIRLS and kicking them out of school for twerking or “being too sexual,” meanwhile, white women are making up “feminist twerk teams” for lolz.
It’s about the fact that we still have laws governing how, where, and when we can congregate in public in many places.
It’s about the fact that the people who cultivated twerking (in the US, and throughout the diaspora) are the most likely to be stop-and-frisked, and subsequently surveilled, because they happen to be visibly non-white.
In summation (gonna try to sound bite-ify this for you, since the more abstract things seem to be giving you a hard time): It’s about the fact that Black folks, and visibly non-white folks are continually penalized for protecting their works/community/culture, while simultaneously having it STOLEN from them and its origins erased.
